You need to have http://www.TweetPages.com on this list. They do awesome custom backgrounds for only $73!
They also have template backgrounds for $0.99 that look better than most of the free stuff out there. The $1 is worth it.

Just launched a beta version of “Free Twitter Designer†– http://www.freetwitterdesigner.com.
It’s is a web-based application that allows the average person (i.e. someone who isn’t a graphic designer) to create professional looking background images for their Twitter profile.

nice list, but Doctor Twitter simply goes above and beyond the competition on free backgrounds for twitter as far as design and applying the actual theme is concerned..”one click apply” to your profile and we have 100’s all free with REAL designs..not that stock art looking work…check us out.

Anyone who does custom twitter backgrounds for near-$100 is coo coo! Get it? Coo coo, twitter, bird? Yeah, I’m a dork.
I also do them for pay, but less than half that. $30 is usually the most I ask. And only when explicitly requested by people who want a completely custom background.

Thanx for these – i’ve just had fun playing with BGpatterns and created a new background for my @mmSeason profile and i can see myself having more fun playing with some of the others as i get better at tweaking my own designs.
I agree with Ricky that i don’t want to pay for an image. I’m not that close to being professional yet. ;0)
Only trouble was that BGpatterns didn’t accept my anti-spam ‘disposable’ email address but forced me to use my ‘real’ one. I could download my pattern without registering, so it didn’t really matter, but i’d rather have supported them.
Oh, by the way, i’m tweeting this post because it’s so useful. :0)
