The Addiction of StumbleUpon

StumbleUpon has carried many web surfers deep in the night, into the wee hours of many mornings by offering a never ending stream of interesting randomness that is always just a click away.

It’s an adventure. Your clicks bring you to visuals and sounds you never would have expected to find on the internet. Before stumbling existed, web surfing consisted of search engines and links given to you on web forums or by friends on IM. Surfing used to be a mundane process where you knew what you were looking for and only needed to find a way to get to it.

Stumbling has brought us unseen destinations, exciting vistas of information and opinion and stupidity, the exotic dangers of a random NSFW page, and the mindless time wasting flash games we would never have found otherwise. StumbleUpon has given people a reason for being on the internet when they have nothing else to do but explore.

Everything is within your grasp, everything is only a click away. Whether you know it or not, when you stumble your way through the internet you are set on a quest. Your quest is to see the entirety of the internet, its best and its worst. The more clicks you take, the deeper into the web you travel and the more difficult it becomes to leave. You enter a vastness that is impossible to comprehend, yet it is all veiled behind the mask of the click. That click, the next one might take you to something wonderful, some amazing thing no one else has seen before, you might discover the next greatness that will make you an internet rock star to your peers. One click, just one more, just one more, one more…

Parents have always told their children that it is best to take things in moderation, this also applies to the click of StumbleUpon. Most stumble addicts out there know who they are, and that’s a good first step. No more stumbling through papers and meals, no more stumbling until the crack of dawn scares you into your bed. We can enjoy StumbleUpon, but we must not abuse it. The world misses you, and we only want to see you again and we hope you are doing well.

It is the evolution of the web. We’ve moved past railways and roadways and are now flying through the internet, teleporting from destination to destination. There is a new world to explore, and its all at your fingertips, just one more click away…

I have also been using Stumbleupon for some time now and I think that its really great. It allow for you to keep bookmarks of your sites and allows you the recommend websites to your friends.

From a search engine optimization point of view its also great as you increase the number of backlinks to your website.

    Good points.

This is just about as good a synopsis of what Stumbleupon is, as one could hope to read. A bit more, however, could be stressed. There is such a grand variety on subjects, photos, art, humor, etc., that I have never found the offerings to be boring. I found this site, via FireFox, quite accidentally, but it has given me many hours, (and I hope many more will come in the future) of varied enjoyment.

    Thank You

Stumbleupon has opened up a whole new dimension to the Web. I’ve run across some of the most fantastic sites I’m sure I would never have found on my own.

  24. Sean on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 6:30 am

I don’t even remember what I did on the internet before StumbleUpon. I can’t imagine it. How did I find StumbleUpon without the Stumble button?

So I’m not the only one who stumbled here.
Anyway, StumbleUpon has brought me to some of my favorite and most useful sites… as well as humoring me on the way.

  26. shoaib2k2 on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 8:37 am

  27. moonlight on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 8:46 am

i know mooglinux, that is quite the great irony for me too…..

  28. Shran on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 8:47 am

I also “stumbled upon” this site and I must say I’m a little addicted too (hey… that’s the first step in recovery :-) .

I do guess however that computers, games and the internet are pretty addictive already. Loads ‘n loads of people would experience severe withdrawal problems when artificial memory would become “senile” tomorrow.

Not only have we become addicted to computers, imagine a world in which electricity wouldn’t exist and petrol wouldn’t burn.
Until 200 years back we were able to live in such a world (even though 50 years of age was pretty old). When we had to live in such a world tomorrow i guess most “civilized” countries would totally freak out.

Now how should I thumb this site on SU, up or down ? ;-)

  33. e cigarette on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 3:45 pm

It’s a victimless addiction, unless I don’t get my daily stumbles and then someones going to get hurt.

  34. Said on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 3:47 pm

“The great irony, is that i came here via stumbleupon.”

mooglinux, it’s not ironic; it’s coincidental. In fact, it’s what an avid user of StumbleUpon would eventually stumble into. Therefore, your use of “irony” is ironic. You used it to describe something that is the opposite of ironic.

  35. Oh lol on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 4:02 pm

I actually got here via stubmle

  36. Zeep on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 4:17 pm

    !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. faq on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 5:28 pm

a carefully programmed algorithm that compares like minded users for targeted suggestions is not comparable to using the TV remote to surf through a handful of pre-programmed junk with constant forced advertising breaks. Thats like comparing linux with microsoft.. one has the user and their interests at the center of design, the other forces crap down your throat if you’re willing to submit.

  43. Late night lady on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 6:05 pm

  46. bill on Sun, 8th Mar 2009 7:55 pm

I stumbled here. My name is Bill, and I’m a stumbler…
Found StumbleUpon through a friend on FaceBook. Between the two, I have no time left for gaming. Maybe if I get a Twitter account I can cut out sleep altogether. I often find myself dozing, awakening to find my finger clicking Stumble…

I’VE DISCOVERED SOLUTIONS IN PIECES TO BECOME THE DISASTER SOLUTIONIST MASTER OF EARTH. I’VE DISCOVERED THE EARTHQUAKE SOLUTION AND YOUR SITE WAS VERY HELPFUL IN THE PIECING TOGETHER OF THE GLOBAL SOLUTION. BETWEEN STUMBLEUPON AND MY GLOBAL TEAMS I’VE FOUND THE SOLUTIONS TO DELETE GLOBAL WARMING COMPLETELY. ALSO I’M BEING HEARD ALL OVER THE WORLD IN ANYTHING I SAY AT HOME. Stumbleupon is just like more sophisticated tv, although i’ve stumbled here also

  56. Michael on Mon, 9th Mar 2009 1:44 pm

I liked StumbleUpon better several years ago, before it was quite so popular. It used to be that nearly every click was something interesting. Now it’s more like 90% pedantic crap, with a painful amount of repetition where Stumbler C reposts some junk for Stumbler B’s blog, who reposted from Stumbler A, who reposted something that someone else Stumbled in the first place. That or valueless link-bait like, oh, say, Stumbling a blog post about StumbleUpon.

  57. brainlint on Mon, 9th Mar 2009 3:20 pm

I’ve set a limit for Stumbleupon. I’m only allowed a half an hour at a time, with at least an hour in between. I need to wean myself!

  58. MICHAEL J. SCHMITZ on Mon, 9th Mar 2009 3:26 pm

NOWADAYS ITS DIFFERENT, IT SEEMS WHEN I GET A PROBLEM WITH A SITE, LIKE IT REFUSES MY REGISTRATION I CLICK FOR WHATEVER THEIR OFFERING, JUST PLAIN REFUSES TO ALLOW IT. AND WONT DO ANYTHING, SO I GIVE IT A THUMBS DOWN. THEN STUMBLEUPON’S LITTLE BOX COMES ON AND SAYS THEIR NEW, GIVE IT A THUMBS UP. YOU WANT TO TALK ABOUT EXASPERATION. THEY ACTUALLY WANT ME TO GIVE A THUMBS UP FOR THEIR NEW SITE’S INCOMPETANCE OR ITS A BLACK BLANK, NO WAY. ALSO I’VE HIT A SITE MORE THAN ONCE, THEN I TRY A CLICK JUST A THOUGHT, THEN STUMBLEUPON COMES ON AGAIN, ONLY I’VE SEEN THIS ONE BEFORE. I THINK STUMBLEUPON JUST WANTS TO PLAY GAMES WITH ITS MEMBERS, BECAUSE ITS RULES SEEM TO CHANGE OFF AND ON. STUMBLEUPON IS IN THE WRONG. I DONT NORMALLY GIVE A THUMBS DOWN, ONLY IF THERE’S A PROBLEM WITH EACH SITE, LIKE NO WHERE TO REGISTER OR A SITE OF NOTHING. THEN I GIVE IT A THUMBS DOWN THEIRS STUMBLEUPON WAVEING AITS LITTLE BOX, SO I CLICK THUMBS DOWN AND QUICKLY CLICK NEXT. WHAT A FARCE.

  59. MICHAEL J. SCHMITZ on Mon, 9th Mar 2009 3:48 pm

I WAS READING ONE OF THE OTHER COMMENTS AND I AGREE WHEN IT SAYS STUMBLEUPON IS GETTING SO BIG THAT ITS NOT SHOWING THE GOOD STUFF ANYMORE. WHEN I FIRST GOT ON STUMBLEUPON. I WAS LOOKING FOR AUCTION SITES, I FOUND 5. NOW YOUR LUCKY IF YOU SEE 2 =EBAY AND MAYBE AMAZON, EVEN THOUGH I HAVENT SEEN AMAZON IN 8 MONTHS. BUT IT SEEMS LIKE THE OLD GOOD OLE SITES WERE GREAT, BUT THEIR EITHER GONE OR ONLY FOR OTHERS. A THOUGHT == SUPPOSE STUMBLEUPON SPLIT THEIR SITES INTO 3 SECTIONS LIKE A PIE, A LITTLE FROM EACH CATAGORY FOR EACH SECTION, THEN SPLIT THE PLANET INTO 3 SECTIONS. RUN A SECTION FOR EACH SECTION FOR 45 DAYS, THEN ROTATE ALL SECTIONS SO EACH SEES A NEW SECTION FOR 45 DAYS. JUST A THOUGHT, BECAUSE WHAT MOST OF US SAW LAST YEAR, SOME OF US HAVE NEVER SEEN SINCE. IT MAKES US ALL WONDER. MY MAIN REASON FOR AUCTIONS IS I’VE BEEN BUYING AND OTHERS HAVE SENT ME BRAND NEW ITEMS FROM 1967 TO 1970= ALL BRAND NEW THINGS STILL IN THERE ORIGINAL PACKAGES FROM EUROPE, ASIA, PANAMA CANAL ZONE AND AMERICA ALL IN ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING IN STORAGE, INCLUDING A DOLL FROM EITHER JAPAN=GEISHA OR A CHINA DOLL FROM 40+YEARS AGO. HAVE A NICE DAY. MIKE

    So true….
The great thing about stumbleupon is that you also get those omfg ugly web1.0 sites, wich unexpectedly have some damn good content, but are too old to get a robot.txt for the search engines.

  67. Dave on Tue, 10th Mar 2009 8:42 am

I am NOT addicted.. StumbleUpon is not so convenient when you do not have a toolbar (Google Chrome) and have to go out of your way to go there.

  68. Beth in Canada eh! on Tue, 10th Mar 2009 9:40 am

I have been using SU for a few months now. I love this place, BUT…I have noticed web sites are becoming repetitous….you can have the same web site as one of your favorites more than once, just showing different links of the same site. I am seeing more and more repeats of the same site. I don not know if it is because of the subscriptions that you get from your added friends or not….SU also needs a better “How To” set up and use SU to it’s full potential.

Hi my name is hightech hippie, I have been addicted to stumbling for about 8 months now, it has caused me to be late to many family functions, miss hundreds of hours of sleep, miss meals, fights with my wife, not calling my mother, missing deadlines at school and work, not have sex with wife, ignore family, miss the liquor store, not feed the pets, and piss my pants. I just want to stop so bad but I can’t, I have even started a 12 step program in my city. Please pray for me. Thank you for letting me share.

StumbleUpon is one of the best social media tools available in our opinion. It is also the best way to obtain genuinely (or as close to as possible) random inspiration on a variety of subjects.

Unfortunately, its content has been diluted somewhat in quality over the past 6-12 months – but it remains of high value to us.

Is it ironic that I stumbled here?

  96. Token on Thu, 2nd Jul 2009 1:33 pm

DON’T YOU HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE TYPE ONLY IN CAPS? IT USUALLY REALLY BOTHERS ME BUT NOW I SEE THAT SOMETIMES ITS THE ONLY WAY TO STAND APART FROM A VAST OCEAN OF BLANDNESS.

This is like stumble cheerleader central. The only interesting post is from the guy who is screaming in caps.

And NO it’s NOT IRONIC that you stumbled here! Irony is the when the opposite of the expected occurs. Like when you are driving a car, drunk without a seatbelt, and you park your car in front of the wrong house and then a sober police officer smashes into your car and flees the scene without leaving a note. It’s ironic because the behavior of the police officer is the opposite of what you would expect.

It’s not irony when you find a site about stumbleupon on stumbleupon! People who use stumbleupon are going to see articles about how many people love stumbleupon and then they are going to thumbs up those articles so that other people will see the same website and maybe those people will love stumbleupon too. It’s not ironic, it’s a big, long, lubed up, circle jerk.

You know what? I HATE STUMBLEUPON. I used to like it but now I can only find sites like this. The only cool thing that ever happens on stumbleupon anymore is when someone says something really awful in the comments below a dumb stumble and a flame war erupts and suddenly people are giving thumbs up to the sites not because of the content of the article but because of the insightful commentary.

Stumbleupon blows goats. I only use it so I can thumbs down every single site that might make it better. I only thumbs up the awful, useless, disgusting, and disturbing sites. The kinds of things that you know are on the internet but never want to actually see.

I have only one more contribution to make to this stumble-

This link is to a picture of the structure of the stumbleupon algorithm and an article about the secret information gathering that stumbleupon does but does not disclose to the public.

Stumble, stumble, on we go -
Finding stuff we do not know
    In the evening’s afterglow
    All we do is stumble.

Funny cats and old dead stars
Zombies games and New York Bars
Biggest boulders up on Mars -
    All are meat to Stumble

Stumble this world and the next
Write your comments in green text
Make bad comments, get folks vexed -
    That’s the fun of Stumble!
