Jinni: A Movie Search Engine like no other

jinni2-thumbSome of you may remember when I covered the ovguide, a way to search for movies and television shows online, but now I would like to talk about Jinni, a movie search engine that will find what movie you are looking for not by title, but mood.

Yes, let’s say you are in a romantic mood, but your partner is in an action movie mood. Well, you can go into the movie search engine and pull up recommendations such as Mr. and Mrs. Smith or other options. Granted, Jinni won’t allow you to find the movie you want online, but you have to admire its unique search ability.

For example, you can browse a movie by plot. Say you want a sci-fi movie with guy saving the world with special effects, well, you will get a list of options, and you will even see some images.

Jinni also gives the user the option of searching for movies by period or even the amount of praise that the film received on its first showing. There have been complaints that Jinni is limited by the amount of content, displaying only mainstream movies that you probably would have seen already.

In its defense, Jinni is still in beta phase, so what do you expect? I will give Jinni credit for trying to be the one who comes out when people rub the movie mood wish lamp. I mean, can you search imdb.com for what movie that you are in the mood for? I don’t think so.

Thanks for the great overview that really captures what’s unique about Jinni. As you mention, we’re actively expanding our catalog all the time. We’re also adding to the “Watch It” options on Jinni that now include streaming, downloads, and DVD rental and purchase. Feedback always welcome!
