Please tell me that what are the basic elements which a template should have in order that our web site appears attractive and more easier to navigate.

A sidebar on one side or the top of the site that has links to things like forums, services etc.

All text and news in the center

RSS feeds on one side as well as links to sponsors, affiliates, advertisements and other things like that.

And for Gods sake, I know what time it is, I know what day it is, and I know the temperature outside. So don't bother putting a clock or a calender on your website, it just takes longer to load and accomplishes absolutely nothing.

It should be set in a way that people just need to glance to get what they're looking for.

In my opinin the most important element to attractive templates is good use of white space. Make sure all elements have a good margin separating them from the other elements on the page (5 or 10 pixels is a pretty good rule of thumb).

Use simple easy to read fonts for large blocks of text and try incrasing the line height (e.g. if you font is 1em set the line height to 1.2em, see how much less daunting it looks!)

Remember that areas of the page with nothing in them is a good thing, they help to break up the content.

Put the most relavant information at the top of the screen if users have to scroll down the page to find what they are looking for they will leave (they are cruel like that).

Restrict yourself to two or three colours to begin with, you can always add more later if you need to.

And as Dartz said about clocks, weather, etc dont add more functunality than is required, it just clogs up the important content and increases download times.

For a web site to be appealing to me it has to have balance. I don't like websites where all the information is cluttered all over the place, the website needs a symmetrical feel. It needs to be easily navigated. I don't want to have to search through paragraphs of links to find what I am looking for.
